AI visibility benchmark

AI tools name the competition more than the business.

Ask an AI tool about a trade, a product or a city, and the business you asked about is usually left out while a competitor is named. We put 521 small-business and local questions about 25 businesses across industries to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and read all 5,611 answers. These are the totals. Data through November 5, 2026.

What stands out

Five findings from the data.

Competitors are named far more often

A competitor was named in 44.6% of answers, about 3.3 times as often as the business itself (13.4%).

The five tools rarely agree

For 900 questions put to all five tools in the same check, all five named the business 3.6% of the time and none did 74.9% of the time. In 21.6% the tools split, and in 9.6% only one tool named it.

Being named is not the same as being linked

Perplexity linked to the business's own site in 19.2% of answers; Google AI Overviews did in 8.7%. A mention without a link sends no visitor.

Sources vary a lot by tool

Answers showed at least one source 85.1% of the time, with 7.9 sources on average. Perplexity showed sources in every answer; Google AI Overviews in 72.8%.

Google does not always show an AI Overview

13.2% of the Google searches we ran (143 of 1,081) came back with no AI Overview at all.

How we counted

Method and limits.

  • 5,611 successful answers from June 11 to November 5, 2026, most of them from mid October. Failed requests are left out.
  • 521 small-business and local questions about 25 businesses across industries, written the way people ask about a trade, a product or a city.
  • Named: the answer mentions the business by name. Linked: a link or source in the answer points at the business's own website. Competitor: the answer names at least one of that business's listed competitors. Showed sources: the answer listed at least one source or link.
  • This is not a random sample of all businesses, so the numbers describe these 25 businesses, not every business. Answers also change from day to day.
  • No business, question or competitor is named here, and nothing on this page identifies one.
