When an AI Answer Gets Your Business Wrong

Old hours, a closed location, a service you stopped offering. AI tools sometimes describe a business inaccurately. Here is where those mistakes usually come from and how to correct the sources.

Sometimes the problem is not that an AI tool leaves you out. It is that it names you and gets something wrong: hours you changed last spring, a second location you closed, a price from an old menu, or a service you stopped offering years ago.

It is frustrating, and there is no form to submit to ChatGPT or Gemini that edits the answer directly. But these mistakes almost always come from somewhere on the web, and the sources are things you can fix.

Where wrong details usually come from

  • Old pages on your own site. A forgotten "holiday hours" page, an old location page or a PDF menu that still loads.
  • Listings you no longer manage. A directory profile created years ago that still shows the old phone number.
  • Your Google Business Profile. Hours, categories and services there are read widely. If they are out of date, expect that to spread.
  • Third-party articles. A local roundup or news story written when the details were different.
  • Training data. Some tools rely partly on what they learned months ago, so a correct web today can take time to show up.

Fix the sources, starting with your own

Begin with what you control. Update or remove old pages on your website, and redirect any URL for a closed location to a page that says so clearly. Make your current hours, address and services easy to find on the home page and the contact page, in plain text rather than only inside an image.

Next, check your Google Business Profile line by line. Our guide on Google Business Profile and reviews covers what to review. Then search for your business name with your old phone number or old address to find stale listings, and claim or correct them.

Say the correct thing clearly, once, in one place

An AI tool weighing two conflicting details will often go with the one stated most clearly and most consistently. A single sentence such as "We moved from Main Street to Oak Avenue in March" on your about page gives a reader, human or machine, the context that the old address is history. Structured data helps here too, and our structured data guide explains the basics.

Then check again

Corrections take time to reach every tool, and some update faster than others. That is why it helps to keep asking the same questions on a schedule and compare. Found in AI records each answer, so you can see when a tool stops repeating the old detail, and which tools have not caught up yet. No one can promise when that will happen. You can, though, see whether it has.
